Thermaflex 50 Years: Celebrating Our People and Purpose

Fifty years is a long time in any industry. In insulation and pre-insulated piping systems, where solutions must perform reliably for decades, it means something more. It means trust, earned project by project, partner by partner, since 1976. This year, Thermaflex turns 50. And we took a moment to celebrate it together, on Vlieland, the Netherlands, on June 19.

Thermaflex was founded in Waalwijk, the Netherlands, with a clear purpose: develop innovative, durable solutions for efficient energy distribution. From technical insulation to pre-insulated piping systems, the portfolio has grown to serve engineers, installers, and project teams across heating, cooling, ventilation, potable water, refrigeration, air-conditioning, marine, and industrial applications, in 45+ countries worldwide.

What started as a focused manufacturing operation is today a global partner for some of the most demanding thermal distribution challenges in various markets.

The product range has evolved significantly over five decades. But the original thinking has not changed. Build solutions that perform. Make them last. Make them responsible.

The milestones along the way tell that story clearly. In the late 1990s, Thermaflex became the first company in the world to completely switch to (H)CFC-free production, a bold step at the time. Cradle to Cradle Certified® status followed, confirming what had been building for years: sustainability was not a trend for Thermaflex, it was a design principle.

More recently, the introduction of Flexalen® heat pump solutions and ThermaSmart® Marine 4.0, reflects where the market is heading and where Thermaflex is already positioned. From ESG reporting to Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), the company continues to back its claims with independently verified data.

None of this happens without Thermaflex people, 250+ professionals across manufacturing, engineering, sales, technical support, and supply chain. They work with engineers on system design, support installers on site, develop new solutions with partners, and keep projects moving from specification through commissioning.

This is why the 50th anniversary celebration was not a press conference or a product launch. It was a full day on Vlieland, a car-free island in the Wadden Sea of the Netherlands, with colleagues from across the organisation. An opportunity to step away from our workstation, breathe sea air, and be reminded of what makes the work meaningful.

The day of our celebration event on June 19^th started with the Island Games, a series of challenges that took teams across the island. Each task was different. Some required physical coordination. Others demanded quick thinking, creative problem-solving, or clear communication under pressure and cross language boundaries.

What became obvious, quickly, is that the teams who did best were not the most competitive ones. They were the ones who listened to each other, adapted when a plan was not working, and kept finding ways forward together. It is the same dynamic that drives good project execution: not one person with all the answers, but a team that figures it out.

One of the Island Games tasks asked teams to create a short slogan that captured the spirit of the day. Team Rock (one of the 13 teams) came up with a line that summed it up perfectly for many of us:

“Thermaflex 50 Years on Vlieland: one team, one island, turning every challenge into shared energy and fun.”

It was written for the game, but it describes how we approach our work together every day.

Between challenges, colleagues spread out across the island for a range of outdoor activities. Kayaking along the coastline. Beach volleyball. Beach golf. Horse riding. Power kiting. Seal watching. Guided nature walks through the Vlieland dunes.

The energy was high all day. People who might not cross paths in daily work found themselves on the same team, cheering each other on, laughing through the difficult moments. There is something about being active outdoors, physically engaged and focused on the moment, that brings out the best in people. It reflected, without anyone needing to say it, the kind of drive and vitality that Thermaflex brings when serving our clients.

The day wound down with a BBQ dinner on the island. Good food, open air, and time that was unstructured. No agenda, no slides, no schedules.

These are the moments where real connections form. Where a colleague from a different country becomes a familiar face. Where a conversation started over dinner continues back in a project meeting weeks later. Where people remember that the company they work for is, at its core, made of people who genuinely care for each other. That matters more than any job description.

Before dinner was served, we gathered to announce the Island Games winners and to hear a short opening speech from our CEO, Hans.

The evening then moved into Mingo Bingo, a people-focused activity where colleagues discovered surprising things about the people they work with every day, or about colleagues they’ve never met in person. It was warm, funny, and connecting. This day was about one thing: recognizing that the strength of Thermaflex has always been its people.

Anniversaries invite reflection, but the more important question is always what comes next. For Thermaflex, 2026 is not just a celebration year. It is a recommitment to the direction already set: smarter systems, lower carbon, stronger partnerships, and verified environmental performance at every step.

The professionals we work with, engineers, contractors, installers, specifiers, and project owners, need solutions they can rely on for the long term. That expectation is what Thermaflex has been working on since 1976 and stays committed to.
