CO2 counter for Thermaflex products.

Total CO2 savings occur due to:

  • Foam insulation tubes in heating applications;
  • Foam insulation tubes in cooling applications;
  • Enabled sustainable energy delivery with pre-insulated pipes.

CO2 savings by Thermaflex foam tube insulation products

It is approximately estimated how much CO 2 equivalent emission could be saved due to use of insulation products. Energy savings lead to saving of energy resources used in production of energy. Avoided emissions from production process of energy is counted and kg of CO2 equivalent emissions to atmosphere estimated. 

All five Thermaflex production site specific data were used.

  • Each production site was assessed and determined how much raw materials have been purchased during 2014 for production of insulation materials. Estimated that at least 80% of raw materials in each production plant were used to produce insulation materials except subsidiary in the Netherlands which mainly produces pre-insulated pipe systems.
  • Product portfolios of Thermaflex production sites were assessed and determined approximately what % from total raw materials was used to produce foam insulation tubes. From there it was estimated what amount from insulation materials produced are for heating applications what amount for cooling applications. Estimations were based on region of operation of Thermaflex production plants. E.g. it was estimated that 90% of insulation produced in Thailand was for cooling and 10% for heating applications based on climate conditions where products are distributed. (1)
  • Further it was determined which eight products by dimensions and physical properties were produced the most. Thanks to this data, one can estimate the average quantity of insulation tubes in meters that can be produce per kg of raw materials.
  • Using all eight established common product dimensions heat losses and heat savings were estimated for each one of them. Calculations were made according to EN ISO12241 standard for one meter of specific insulation tube. Energy savings were estimated by comparing uninsulated pipe and insulated pipe.
  • Using all established common product dimensions savings in energy due to condensation prevention were estimated. Calculations were made according to EN ISO12241 standard for one meter of specific insulation tube. Energy savings were estimated by comparing minimum insulated pipe and insulated pipe with selected product.
  • Parameters used to estimated energy savings in heating for 1 meter of insulation:
    • Steel pipe;
    • Ambient temperature 20o C;
    • Medium temperature 60o C;
    • Forced ventilation assumed to be none.
  • Parameters used to estimate energy savings in cooling for 1 meter of insulations:
    • Steel pipe;
    • Ambient temperature 32o C;
    • Medium temperature 5o C;
    • Relative air humidity 70%;
    • Forced ventilation assumed to be none.
  • After establishing average energy savings per meter of product in heating and cooling it was estimated how many hours per year they would provide energy savings by multiplying 7month with 30days and 8hours per day.
  • Next step was to estimate what amount of CO2 can be prevented by saving specific amount of energy resources. For cooling it was assumed that electrical energy savings are made, thus lowering emissions due to electrical energy production. For heating it was assumed that savings occur in heat generation by mixed fuel. (2)
  • As Thermaflex has customers in more than forty countries then World Electricity Generation by Fuel was used to estimate the average kg CO2 emitted per kWh produced. (3)
  • For heat energy saved World Heat Generation by Fuel mix was used to establish kg CO2 emitted per kWh saved. (3)
  • Estimations on insulation materials in cooling and heating in terms of energy savings are made an equal, annual phase of use. A time period of 1680 hours is used to estimate total savings made in an equal phase of use by Thermaflex insulation tubes.
  • Savings in heating on average per minute is estimated at 591.2 kg CO2eq in a year.
  • Savings in cooling on average per minute is estimated at 18.11kg CO2eq in a year. (4)

CO2 savings by Thermaflex pre-insulated pipe products - Flexalen 600

  • It is known for Thermaflex how much product is produced and delivered to customers.
  • Amount of dwellings connected with pre-insulated pipe systems to energy distributor are estimated.
  • It is estimated how many of projects realized are connected to sustainable energy.
  • Assumption is made that CO2 equivalent emission savings are done due to enabled sustainable energy delivery to dwelling with pre-insulated pipe instead of ‘grey‘ energy.
  • European average amount of energy consumed by dwelling is used. (3) 
  • Global Warming Potential is calculated in CO2eq/kWh for amount of ‘grey’ energy mix used by dwelling. (3)
  • Global Warming Potential is calculated in CO2eq/kWh for amount of ‘green’ energy mix used by dwelling. (3)
  • CO2 eq emission savings do occur if sustainable energy is used instead of average country energy mix. It is assumed that sustainable projects enable sustainable energy mix (3) delivery to dwellings instead of country average energy mix.
  • Difference of kg CO2 equivalent emissions between ‘grey’ energy mix and sustainable energy mix is calculated. 
  • Savings in sustainable instead of ‘grey’ heat energy use on average per minute is estimated at 103.93 kg of CO2eq in a year.

MWh green energy enabled

  • It is known for Thermaflex how much product is produced and delivered to customers.
  • Amount of dwellings connected with pre-insulated pipe systems to energy distributor are estimated.
  • It is estimated what fraction of projects realized are connected to sustainable energy.
  • European average amount of energy consumed by dwelling is used. (3) 
  • Fraction of total dwellings connected to sustainable energy can is calculated and then multiplied by energy consumption per dwelling so total MWh of sustainable energy enabled for dwellings is calculated.
