Fun fact: planet Earth is about 4.5 billion years old. Mankind: about 140,000 years old. Let’s put that in perspective; if you condense the Earth’s lifespan into 24 hours, or 1 full day, we have been here for about 3 seconds. And yes, in those 3 seconds we have managed to split the atom, industrialized processes to satisfy global needs, and built advanced machines to navigate the universe in search of new homes. But what about our own home?
As the only planet in this solar system with life, we are 1 in a million. Actually, scientifically, we are 1 in a 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. Yet it is this home that we have arguably neglected for too long now. The home that has given us life, food, medicine, health and warmth, but at the same time screams from the deepening scars caused by global warming, resource scarcity and environmental destruction.
A lot has changed since the first Earth Day in 1970 - also for Thermaflex ‘taking care of energy and environment’ has risen to a whole new level. Our environmental challenges are already starting to become social challenges. Millions wake up today to see their livelihood sinking into subsistence or their homes being taken right from under their feet. Most would agree that it's high time to change our (mis)direction, and look for responsible ways for growth. We just have to take a good look around us.
Call it fate, but today is also the day that leaders from 160 countries will officially sign the Paris Climate Agreement. This demonstrates an increasing awareness and an appropriate sense of urgency that things will have to change. At Thermaflex, everyday is Earth Day. Our climate, resources and ecosystems are and will always be our long-term strategy drivers. We take pride in the impact we’ve already been able to make (find it here for 2015), hope it can serve to inspire, and maximize our global impact in this way.
Because everyone has a part to play in mitigating the destructive effects of climate change. From our own everyday choices to the people we put in power to make them for us. May your voice be heard, not only on this day, but also on every other day.
Only then, together, we can make it to the 4th second...
